Multnomah County Sheriff's Office will have dedicated patrols searching for DUII drivers as part of an ongoing traffic safety campaign and enforcing safety belt laws in a statewide traffic enforcement "blitz" through Labor Day weekend. MCSO Deputies will be on the lookout for drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or other drugs and not heed the message to designate a sober driver. MCSO Deputies will also be working to increase proper safety belt and child car seat use, watching for drivers violating the "hands free" cellphone law and persons exceeding the posted speed limit. Speeding and Driver impairment are the most common cause of injury crashes.
Statewide observation surveys in June 2015 found 98% of Oregon travelers routinely using safety belts or child car seats. Not surprisingly, belt use was lower among persons killed crashes -- 75% among all crash fatalities and only 50% among persons killed in night time crashes, according to ODOT reports. In the back seat? Wear your seatbelt. In 2014, 58% of back seat passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes weren't buckled up.
Oregon Law requires children less than forty pounds be restrained in a child seat. Children under one year or weighing less than twenty pounds must be restrained in a rear-facing child seat. A child over forty pounds must be restrained in either a child seat or a booster seat appropriate for their size until they reach age eight or 4' 9" tall AND the adult belt system fits them correctly.
These patrols are made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Oregon Department of Transportation. Multnomah County Sheriff's Office is participating in High Visibility Enforcement patrols supported by a grant from the Oregon State Sheriff's Association.
