The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has continued to receive reports from members of our community being targeted by ongoing phone scams attempting to elicit money from victims.
Previously, MCSO has released information about these phone scams and the various tactics being used to victimize individuals. The scammer calls to explain that you have a warrant due to missed jury duty, or other unpaid fines, and need to wire money or send pre-paid gift cards immediately to resolve the issue.
These scammers identify themselves as a member of MCSO; most recently, the scammers have used names of current MCSO command-level staff members. The voicemail greeting on the call-back number provided also identifies the scammers as MCSO employees.
MCSO does not request payment of any fines via phone and will not initiate any request involving a wire-transfer or pre-paid card.
These scams are not only being targeted to individuals within our immediate community; they have reached statewide locations.
We urge the community to be aware of this ongoing scam. If you are contacted by a person claiming to be a member of MCSO and requesting payment in any capacity, DO NOT SEND MONEY or engage with this scam.
If you have been a victim of this scam, please file a police report by calling (503) 823-3333 and select the option for non-emergency police reporting in the jurisdiction that reflects your residence.
