On March 14, 2018 at approximately 1:25pm staff at the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Inverness Jail in northeast Portland discovered that inmate ROBERT THOMAS ARRINGTON, age 29, was unaccounted for during a routine check. Staff immediately placed the facility into lockdown, which is standard procedure, and began a systematic search of the facility.
The MCSO Corrections Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiations Team, were dispatched to the facility to support search operations along with MCSO Patrol Unit deputies to assist with a perimeter around the facility. Sheriff Mike Reese and Corrections Chief Deputy Derrick Peterson responded to the facility to help coordinate search efforts.
At 4:37pm ARRINGTON was located inside the facility by the search teams and was taken into custody without further incident. It was discovered that ARRINGTON accessed the interior ceiling area through a hatch. Due to the security features and design of the facility, ARRINGTON was not able to get outside of the building at any time.
MCSO Detectives are now assisting with the investigation and will be forwarding criminal charges to the Multnomah County District Attorney's office for prosecution.
Multnomah County Facilities Management personnel are now onsite and working with MCSO staff to inspect the building and begin any necessary repairs. No injuries were reported during this incident and the public was never in danger.
"Staff responded quickly and appropriately to the report of a missing inmate. I am proud of the work of our agency and facility staff for the immediate response and ability to address this serious issue. At no time was the public at risk," said Sheriff Reese.
