In the US, the Cinco de Mayo holiday is full of fiestas, margaritas, and cervezas! During the Cinco de Mayo holiday in 2016, 257 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes. What’s even more disturbing is that 20% of those were drunk-driving crashes. The drivers of over half of those vehicles weren’t just a little bit drunk: 53% had BACs of .15 or higher – almost twice the legal limit.
Deputies with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office want to make sure everyone stays safe this holiday weekend. MCSO will have enhanced DUII patrols from May 4th until May 6th.
Cinco de Mayo can be a fun and festive time for those who choose to celebrate the right way: with a plan for a safe and sober ride home. Drunk driving claims too many lives. Don’t become a statistic; celebrate responsibly.
Always have a plan.
- Designate a sober driver. Is it your turn to be the D.D.? Take that role seriously—your friends could be relying on you.
- Call a taxi or ride-sharing service.
- Use public transportation.
- If you see an impaired driver, call 9-1-1.
- If you know someone who plans to drive impaired, take the keys and make arrangements for a safe trip home.
