On Tuesday, June 16 at approximately 3:28 p.m., Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies were dispatched to a two vehicle injury crash on E. Bell Rd. in Springdale. When deputies arrived, they found two vehicles, a BMW 328 and a Honda Pilot, badly damaged and multiple people injured. Based on these factors, MCSO’s Vehicular Crimes Team (VCT) was called out.

Witnesses reported the BMW turned onto E. Bell Rd from the Historic Columbia River Highway at a high rate of speed. The BMW traveled in the wrong lane of traffic, swerved to miss a vehicle and then overcorrected, crashing into the Honda. One passenger in the BMW was ejected. That passenger, and a second passenger in the BMW, were transported to the hospital with head injuries. The driver of the BMW remained on scene and was not hurt. The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. A passenger in the SUV was not injured. Everyone is expected to survive.

The driver of the BMW, identified as Jonathan Hutu, 21, was charged with Assault IV x 3, Reckless Endangering of Another Person x 4, Reckless Driving and Criminal Mischief II. Hutu was given a criminal citation in lieu of custody.

This is the third major crash in three days. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind drivers to slow down. By slowing down, we make our roads safer for our children, families and friends.
