UPDATE: Suspect identified and arrested, additional victims possible (Photo)

Update on Friday, Dec. 24:

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Transit Police Division has identified the suspect as 33-year-old Jose Thomas Chanmay. A law enforcement member identified Chanmay after recognizing the photo shared with the public in a press release on Thursday. Later that evening, a TriMet employee reported that Chanmay was riding a bus on NE 82nd Avenue. Transit Police officers responded and arrested Chanmay near NE 82nd Ave. & NE Glisan St.

Transit Police officers believe there may be additional victims and urge those to contact the Transit Police Division by calling 503-962-7566 and referring to this case. Chanmay's booking photo is attached as another photo for reference.

Chanmay is charged with:

  • One count of sex abuse in the third degree
  • One count of harassment

During the investigation, Transit Police officers learned Chanmay is on parole and had a warrant issued for his arrest for a prior sex abuse charge.

Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues into recent crimes.

The Transit Police Division thanks the public for their assistance.

Initial press release on Thursday, Dec. 23:

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Transit Police Division seeks the public’s assistance in identifying a man that inappropriately touched a 15-year-old girl while on a TriMet bus. Around 7 p.m. on December 15, the man boarded the Line 72 bus along NE 82nd Avenue and exited the bus at the NE Cully Blvd. & NE Killingsworth St. stop.

The man is described as a Hispanic male in his 20s or 30s, approximately 5’ 1” tall, of average build, with brown eyes and black hair. He identified himself to the victim as “Jesus.” He was seen wearing a blue, Nike hooded sweatshirt, jeans, black shoes and was carrying a black backpack. Photographs of the man are attached.
